KILLING PART OF TOWN

Sober up momma dear/ Visiting day is here
And I do need a ride to county jail
My daddy’s set to die when that morning sun gets high
For sending Uncle Jake to lover’s hell

Jake, he never came around till Pa was out of town
With his slick hair and his brush salesman smile
You said his stayin’ wasn’t sin, since Jake is only kin
Guess he plumped your pillow Valentino style

So won’t you come and ride me down to the killing part of town
Where we can walk among the dying dreams
Past the place where Jesus saves, where the hopeless count the days
This don’t look like no promised land to me

Daddy came home on a hunch just to see his honey bunch
He made a sale he bought a dress for you
He thought you’d read his mind
All undressed and turpentined
Then he saw that Jake had played him for the fool

Won’t you come and ride me down
To the killing part of town
Where we can walk among the dying dreams
Where the devil gets his thrill planting crosses on the hill
This don’t look like no promised land to me

Damn you momma, damn you to your bones
Damn you daddy, for leaving me here alone

So sober up, momma dear/ Visiting day is here
And I still need that ride to county jail
But I wouldn’t smile so soon cause by late this afternoon
You’ll be joining your boy Jake in lover’s hell

Damn you momma, damn you to your bones
Damn you daddy, for leaving me here alone
Damn you momma, damn you to your soul
And damn you daddy, for leaving me hear alone
